One Night I Just Clicked On Some Random Anime

I was in bed one night. Just bored. Scrolling through Netflix. Not looking for anything specific. Just clicking random stuff. My wife had mentioned something about a Japanese language course in Delhi but I wasn’t really paying attention to that. I was just trying to find something to watch.

My wife came in all angry. She was like “What are you doing? Go to sleep.” I was like “Just one more.” But I didn’t stop.

The next day I woke up and immediately started watching again. I was like you know what let me just finish this season. Watched like four episodes. Then five more.

My wife was getting annoyed. She came home from work and I was still watching. She was like “Are you seriously watching this all day?” I said yeah basically.

She thought I was wasting my time. Called them cartoons. I kept saying they’re anime not cartoons but she didn’t care.

But honestly I was like completely hooked. Couldn’t stop watching. Watched another show. Then another.

And I kept thinking like what if I could actually understand what they’re saying? Instead of just reading subtitles the whole time.

Downloaded Duolingo Thinking That Would Work

I was like okay maybe I can learn Japanese from an app. Downloaded Duolingo.

Did some lessons. Learning hiragana whatever that is. Learning how to say hello and thank you.

Got through maybe two weeks of it. Then I opened it one day and was like nah this is pointless.

The lessons were about random stuff. Nothing to do with anime. Just meaningless vocabulary.

Deleted it. Didn’t even care at that point.

Found Mentor Language When I Searched For Courses

I was still thinking about learning Japanese though. So I searched for courses in Delhi.

Typed in Japanese language course in Delhi on Google. Bunch of websites came up.

Found Mentor Language. Their site looked okay. Not fancy. Just organized normally.

Checked out https://mentorlanguage.com/japanese-language-course-in-delhi/ and looked at what they have.

Called them. Some guy picked up. I told him I watch anime and want to understand it.

He was like “Oh cool okay we can help you with that.” That was it. Simple. No big sales pitch or whatever.

Went To First Class And Was Immediately Confused

I went to their place. Walked in. There were some people already sitting there.

Teacher came in. Yuki. She was Japanese. Older lady. Seemed nice but also kind of intense.

She just started teaching. Speaking in Japanese. Making us repeat.

And she was like “Okay so Japanese has three writing systems.” My brain immediately started hurting.

Hiragana. Katakana. Kanji. Three different alphabets basically. I was like are you kidding me?

She taught us some basic words. Made us pronounce them. My pronunciation was horrible honestly. But she kept correcting me.

I left that first class completely exhausted. Like mentally exhausted from trying to understand everything.

The Writing System Was Actually Insane

Hiragana was like okay fine it’s phonetic at least. So you memorize symbols and they sound like something.

But hiragana all looks similar. Like they’re all curved lines. I’d constantly mix them up. Write the wrong one.

Katakana is basically the same thing but different looking. And it’s used for different situations. Foreign words and stuff.

But kanji. Man kanji is crazy. Each character is not a sound. It’s a meaning. A small picture that means something.

And there’s like thousands of them. Thousands. How is anyone supposed to learn that many?

I’d go home and practice writing them. Sit at my desk for like two hours. My hand would get so tired.

I’d write one character over and over trying to get it right. Write it ten times and maybe three of them look correct.

My wife would walk by and see me struggling and she’d be like “Why are you doing this to yourself?” I’d be like “Just trust me it’s gonna be cool.”

She didn’t believe me. She thought I was wasting my time on this course.

After A Couple Months Something Actually Started Clicking

I kept going to the Japanese language course in Delhi. Three times a week. And practicing at home. Constantly.

One day I was watching an anime. And the girl said something. And I understood it. Like actually heard the word that Yuki taught me.

My heart literally jumped. I was like oh my god I understood that.

Then like ten minutes later it happened again. I understood another sentence.

I called my wife over. I was like “Did you hear that? I understood what they said.” She was like “Okay cool.” But she was smiling a little.

After Three Months I Could Understand Actual Conversations

So like three months into going to classes something changed. My brain finally started getting how Japanese works.

When I watched anime I could understand maybe like twenty, thirty percent of what people were saying without reading subtitles.

Which doesn’t sound like a lot but it was huge for me. I was actually listening instead of just reading.

Five Months In And I Can Actually Talk To People

I’ve been going to the Japanese language course in Delhi for five months now. And I can actually have conversations.

Not like complicated conversations. Just like basic stuff. Saying hello. Talking about what I do. Ordering food at a restaurant.

My pronunciation is not terrible anymore. I still mess up grammar constantly. I don’t know like ninety percent of the vocabulary.

But like I can talk to someone in Japanese and they understand what I’m saying. That’s real.

Yuki Was Actually A Good Teacher

She didn’t make us feel stupid when we got things wrong. She’d just correct us and move on.

She’d tell us the story behind characters sometimes. Like why they look the way they do. That actually helped with remembering them.

She kept saying watch anime. Said it’s good for learning. That made me happy because I was already doing that constantly.

The other students in class were also cool. Like we were all confused together. All struggling with the same stuff.

Now I Watch Anime And Understand Like Half Without Subtitles

I was watching this show I really like the other day. And I understood like sixty percent without reading subtitles.

My wife heard me understanding stuff and was like “Okay you actually learned this.” She sounded surprised.

Now sometimes when we’re watching something together she’ll be like “What did they say?” And I’ll translate it for her. It’s kind of cool.

The Classes Were Actually Worth The Cost

It cost money. Like a decent amount. But I actually use it now.

Every single day I’m watching anime in Japanese. Sometimes I read manga. I follow Japanese accounts on Twitter and actually understand the posts.

It’s not just watching cartoons anymore. I’m like actually engaging with Japanese culture and language.

Go To Mentor Language If You Want To Learn Japanese

If you’re gonna learn Japanese language course in Delhi then just go to Mentor Language honestly.

Check https://mentorlanguage.com/japanese-language-course-in-delhi/. That’s where I went.

The Japanese language course in Delhi is legit. Yuki actually teaches you stuff. You’ll learn.

I went from just binge watching anime to actually understanding what’s happening. That’s genuinely cool.
